Yes wolfgirl, cork is totally safe as long as it has been stored well and isn't treated for special uses or anything. I use tonnes of it myself however it can get quite dusty in the enclosure if they chew it up obsessively rather than just occasionally...

I was quite suprised hos little they were chewed when I first tried them. They are so soft I thought the gerbs would power through, but it didn't seem to happen like that.
Some gerbils only nibble them when they are 'in the way' same as their thick wooden houses (not sure whey they want a 'new way' but that's gerbils for you?
Others seem to ignore them for a while then suddenly take on the challenge.
Search around for prices though as it varies HUGELY. I often get mine from expos, and can pay as little as around £2 for a gerbil-sized tube just over a foot long. Other places will charge you up to £8 for the same piece. Sometimes though you have to go with what you can find or are happy to pay for compared to some other enrichment items.
(I have a LOT of gerbils though, so budget for me - along with volume - is an important factor).
