Hello, I just wanted to talk about the life of one of my two gerbils, Milky. It all started on 29 April 2017 when I got him and his slightly older brother, Ash. They usually got along well, and their first year went well too.
Skip to about a week before Christmas in 2018, I noticed Milky had a bump in his scent gland. At first, he wasn't affected, until he started to chew it. So, on Christmas Eve, we went to the vet when they were about to close. My dad told me, after he was looked at, the vet said it was a tumour. I was so upset. He said we could get him operated on, or put him down. We ended up choosing the operation.
We waited until 11 February 2019 to have the surgery. Since he was 2 years old, they were worried it wouldn't work well. I was worried at school all day, I was crying even, but on the way home my dad said that he was fine.
Skip again to 2 months and 18 days later, on his and Ash's second anniversary, he was a bit off. He was shaking in my hands when I held him, his eyes were stuck shut with red crusty bits on, Ash nudged him to make sure he was OK and I had to go to school. Again, I was very scared, I was crying again in lessons, it was literally the operation day repeated. This time, my dad didn't know if he was alright.
When we got home, he was in the same state as that morning. I was a bit calmer knowing he was still alive. It was mainly my mum that looked after him, but at one point I took him into my room. He was still shaky which was actually him seizing. Later that night at around 9 PM, I went into the living room and heard him choking. I couldn't handle it anymore so I went back to my room. Around 3 minutes later my mum came to the door crying and said the words I was dreading to hear, "He's gone.".
And that was how Milky's life went. He lived for 2 1/4 years in total. Ash is doing OK, although I dropped him, his teeth have grown out, he had a kidney infection and now he has a bump on his side.
