Hi, new here. I'm just looking for some advice as all vets are closed except from emergencies.
My gerbil has had blood coming out of his ear for a couple of days. Not much just a little bit of staining on his fur.
But I'm just slightly concerned over it as I had a look at his ear and there seems to be a growth or blockage in his ear. It is almost like excess skin coming out of the side of his ear canal but not blocking it.
I know they can get aural chlosteatoma but have never experienced it myself and he doesn't have any mites.
I'm guessing he scratched it as it is probably irritating him. He is acting completely normal. But if anyone has any guess about what it could be, it would be greatly appreciated.

it could be aural chlosteatoma but as long as it's not too much, you may be able to wait until vets' are open but if it gets much worse, I would take him in, like if he is squeaking, seems in pain(noises while sleeping) or it bleeds alot. Do you have manuka honey? just abit on a qtip could help him, each day, it may be itchy or sore. You can order manuka honey online or even try saline (I cup boiled water, 1 tsp. salt, let cool) and use a qtip or piece of paper towel. Poor guy, hopefully it won't get worse for him. Take care, Tammy

Thank you, he doesn't seem to be in pain (no noises or lots of bleeding). I have used some salty water on it and will just keep an eye on it. He is nearly 3 years old so unless it is causing pain or making his quality of life poor, would having it surgically removed be worth it?

not sure about surgery, a vet would know if it is safe/ will help. Fingers crossed he will continue to be okay.

Hey midnightandmystic, how is the little guy? Did you salt water and/or honey help them out here. These ear problems are quite common, so it is always good to share what works and what doesn't. If you went to a vets - what was their advice if you don't mind sharing.
