My Honey had this problem during her last couple of days. She was unable to squat properly so got urine all over herself, and was unable to clean herself due to poor balance and shakiness. I tried cleaning her with a cotton bud and warm water but she hated that, and that was my tipping point for deciding to have her put to sleep. I didn't think it was fair on her to let her die covered in urine when I had the power to give her a better end. I know Bob has a companion so perhaps that will help, but ultimately it's your call.
I would agree with your vet that force feeding is not a good idea. Animals usually stop eating when they know they're at the end of their lives, or when they don't want to live any longer.

Btw, fellows, have you ever needed to clean gerbils' nether regions manually before? If so, what's an effective way to do it?

Took Bob back to the vet after a week of this. Vet did the “pull-skin-&-see-how-fast-it-snaps-back” test & affirm that Bob’s situation is improving. We are going to continue with the subcutaneous fluid injection (vet says it is likely to be for life). Vet says due to the kidney situation, there is nothing we can do for the yellowing stain from the pee (as Bob is peeing onto himself as he can't stand properly). Vet says the priority is to ensure Bob is properly hydrated. Bob actually caught an ear infection 3 days ago, so I got that checkedout by the vet as well. Active bacteria infection in both ears; no parasites (verified by microscope). His roommate, Smob, isn't infected. Vet gave me ear-cleansing solution with Baytril mixed in to apply to both of Bob's ear canals once a day over 5 days.
I'm getting quite decent with the injection, and Bob seems to be minding it less...

Crikey - Bob is certainly in the wars right now - thank goodness you are on the ball and have a really great vet to hand - not often you can get yourself one of them.
Hope it all works out for you.
