Hello, I got some antibiotic liquid from my vet today prescribed for my four year old gerbil who has a burst abscess near his scent gland. The vet has measured the dose in syringes for me but it's such a small amount I cant tell if it's getting into his mouth properly. Would it ok to squirt the meds on some food he can't resist. He said I could do so for the pain meds but didn't mention the antibiotic. I want to make sure he's getting the dose fully. Thanks!
sorry to hear about the burst abscess. you can put it on a treat but make sure it's one of his faves and that it can absorb the med- put the treat on a spoon, then add the med by the syringe onto the treat, then see if it is all on the treat, if not, add the rest to another treat. Hope our boy feels better soon.
mom to Kirby,Theo and Tristan my newest rescues, RIP Saphira and Sophie, may you both be together forever in heaven, I miss you more than you'd ever know.
Hey sparrow - how is he? Did the medication have any effect?
Hi, he was given a second course which he finishes today. The wound is a lot dryer and less smelly but it's a big one so will probably take a while to heal, especially as he is an old man now. Thanks for asking.
Well sparrow, that all sounds very good then - dry is always good.
Is he still under the vet or are you just going to keep an eye on it from now on. Some absesses can come back if the inside of the hole (the fluid left) isn't fully clear before the skin heals up (because they are mean) so watch out again for warmth and swelling there again.
Fingers crossed that is the last you will see of it.
What was he antibiotic called just out of interest if you still have he packaging - it is always useful to have names of products that have worked before in others.
