I have four gerbils but only has a runny nose problem. I used Carefresh bedding since I got my four girls last summer and for a long time Axl had no problem. Then I began to notice a red, runny nose. I switched to 100% Aspen bedding but her runny nose persists. I called the vet, who didn’t seem to think Axl needs to come in because she eats and goes to the bathroom normally. She is active and plump and doesn’t seem to mind her runny nose, which I clean regularly. Sometimes it is only a little dirty and other times a little more. Should I be concerned? Should I take her to the vet anyway? I don’t use any aerosols or scented candles. I have no idea why her nose is usually a little dirty. All recommendations welcome. Thank you.

I made an appointment with the vet. This has gone on too long and I need to rule out anything serious.

do you have a photo? is it red or scabby as well? some aspen can be dusty and did you clean out well before adding the new bedding? does she also have a sand bath? that could be causing issues, too.

Her nose is not red and scabby. It is just usually a little red with mucus that is easily wiped off. I did clean the tank fully. I even vacuumed it. She gets a sand bath once a week but she does not have a sand bath in the tank. I tried that before and my gerbils just emptied the sand each time. Do you think that’s the problem? None of the other gerbils have runny noses. Their noses are perfectly clean. Thank you. Also, this started happening out of nowhere and now it won’t go away.
