So my gerbil, Jerry, has been fine with me health Checking him every week. But just recently if I try to hold him in a position so I can see his stomach he squirms and squeaks as I am hurting him. I am certainly not hurting him unless he has some kind of pain somewhere??? Today I was just a little concerned how squirmy he was. It was as if he knew that I was health checking him because as soon as I would stop he would sit calmly in my hand and be stroked. I'm just confused as to why he has only just started being squirmy and only when he's being health checked.

Jerry may not just be in the mood to be handled when you are doing it or he may have something that could be bothering him, you never know. Maybe give him a treat first, make sure you are calm and see if that helps, maybe when he recently woke up but give him time to wake up so he isn't grumpy. That is great he was letting you check him over, i have a couple rescues that i can't handle yet so have to check them by watching them or getting them when they are dopey enough they will let me check parts of them.

He will usually sit in my hand to eat treats so I'll try my best to take a look at him while he eats.
