I don't use much kitchen roll myself - I buy it for the gerbils!!!!
What are we like?
And you can, and many people do, use toilet paper - I just don't like to myself as I know what it turns to when I get it damp/wet. And if you get it near your mouth it goes all sticky?
There are also similar nest materials and substrates to it if you prefer (safebed and t-bag bedding being two popular ones) but finely shredded paper will do just as fine. The long-shred stuff keeps them entertained for ages if you pile it in!

I've heard of kaytee clean 'n cosy - that's a paper bedding but is very soft, haven't used it myself yet but lots do and recommend it a lot... Maybe I'll try it out at some point...

Yes, someone else recommended that to me a while back - so any feedback on it from others would be great. I had the impression it was a bit pricier than other beddings and came in smaller packs - but that may just be my own presumption?
Maybe it is good to mix with something?

I think betty meant the kitchen roll paper, although I'm sure the tube ends up in the cage too! (not heard of anyone just buying the rolls at least). Is it just nesting material you're after?

Kaytee clean n' cosy can be found on amazon and ebay and probably some other places as well. The whole of the kitchen roll can be put in the cage, both roll and paper.

Yes im interested in different types of bedding. Now the kitchen paper makes much more sense. I had visions of the gerbils shredding kitchen rolls. I was, wondering how soft that could be as mine just make chunks.😂 I have plenty of kitchen paper! I'll look on Amazon for the Kaytee and get one to try it out depending on the price.

So I've just looked at kaytee clean n cosy on Amazon. Is it like carefresh because it looks like it on the picture?

Its very compact when its in the bag so it looks like it but its not like carefresh, it hasn't got big chunks of paper all clumped together, its more similar to when a gerbil chews up kitchen paper to shreds, if you search for reviews then you can see what it looks like when its out of the bag: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wZ-9Py04sI - this video also shows pros and cons with it so is useful to watch for a more experienced approach as I've never used it.

Yes, I did mean the whole thing - comes in packs of 4 for a £1 usually - and lasts ages.
I thought I had seen the Kaytee bedding in PAH (UK) but now not sure if that was actually the same thing?

Looks like thats not what I saw then as it was £22 for a pack. £1 for 4 to try seems much better. I never go in PAH after I found out what they do to the animals that aren't sold. I'll keep looking on amazon for the smaller packs. I'd like to try some although the video does start by saying it very dusty.

Kaytee C&C is cheapest at Portonaquapet.co.uk, and they have the smaller packs too.

Hemp is a good option as a substrate, it's hypoallergenic and a variant of it is native to the Gerbils homeland. But you definitely need hay or kitchen roll (paper) for nesting material with it.
Aspen is another option, but a small number of people and Gerbils are allergic to it.

Thankyou. Ill stick with the kitchen roll and hay then. Is hemp better than carefresh then? I'll probably not go for the aspen if you can get allergies from it as im already allergic to the bedding (or gerbils)so dont fancy adding to that. Looked at portonaquapet and ill order a,smaller pack to try it thankyou
