Does anyone know if it is safe to let gerbils eat a black walnut with the husk removed but the shell intact? I have a few black walnut trees in my yard and was wondering if my boys would enjoy them. Also does anyone know if the wood from a black walnut tree is safe? Thanks!

I don't know about the nuts. Normal walnuts are fine. My dad had a walnut tree chopped down at his work last year and offered me some of the bark for the gerbils but after research I found that walnut shavings are very bad for horses, and some say it's bad to even to have a walnut tree in a paddock. Gerbils are obviously quite different to horses, but in the absence of anything saying walnut wood was definitely safe for rodents I opted against it. egerbil says it's unsafe too. www.ofhorse.com/view-post/Beware-of-Black-Walnut-Shavings-Toxicity

Shame when you have something growing in abundance - but it isn't on the safe list!!!
