I moved both my pairs to new tanks today. Rocket and Storm needed more space, so initially I bought them the Living World Eco Habitat. Then I decided to build a topper for it, and realised it was really more suited to Lily and Daisy. Lily loves climbing so she will hopefully enjoy the topper. Storm is really clumsy and unbalanced so such a tall topper might be dangerous for him. Today Lily and Daisy moved into the Eco Habitat and Rocket and Storm moved into their old 4 foot tank.
I think I may have been overfeeding the gerbils a bit as I when I emptied Lily and Daisy's tank I found a nesting box crammed with food. I'm sure this is Lily's work as she seems to live with the conviction that a famine is coming. She's obsessed with hoarding. It wasn't even just a selection of the less favoured bits of their mix. It included sunflower seeds and other nice foods, so Lily really was dedicated.
This is Rocket and Storm's tank. It's a bit boring at the moment because I only put in their old bedding and their old toys - nothing new just yet. They're a sensitive pair and I'm being cautious. In a few days, if all is well, I will start adding new bedding and the new toys I have for them.
This is Lily and Daisy's tank with topper. My dad built the topper for me. I made several adjustments to the Eco Habitat to make it more "gerbil proof". The wooden posts at the corners have metal corner profiles glued to them, the base is painted with Plastikote and the ventilation holes at the sides have acrylic sheet glued over them to allow for deeper bedding. They haven't discovered the top floor yet. Lily knows it exists and has been trying to climb the mesh to get to it. The ladder is steeper than ideal but I know Lily can manage it as I've seen her climb vertical surfaces before. Daisy copies everything Lily does so once Lily works it out, Daisy will too.
Here are some clips of Lily and Daisy exploring their tank: youtu.be/NtzYOvkGAXA I didn't get many of Rocket and Storm because my camera battery died.
