I apologize for the long story LOL
I got 2 sister gerbils, on pregnancy watch (their brother, a lilac). The next day they started biting me and I had no idea what to do, but was hoping they would just need more time to adjust. A week or more later, they wouldn't event take sunflower seeds from me yet! Opal, a pied nutmeg, was very sweet yet a but frightened always, and Ember, a slate seemed a bit bigger than Opal. They never had pups. So we got two boys, Jasper, a colorpoint nutmeg, and Asher, a pied dove. Jasper was very sweet and I could pet him with 0 fear of being bitten. Asher to this day will bite my finger thinking it is a treat if I hold it a certain way, but he doesn't mean to scare me.
Well, one day, I heard some loud squeaking. It just sounded like Jasper was being squished by Asher. Now, originally, we got the two boys for pairs for the girls, Jasper for Opal, ad Asher for Ember.
"what is their problem?" I thought after seeing them chase several times. Well, turns out Jasper needed a new name, for "he" is actually a she. I named her Willow.
After a little while she became huge. I put her next to a piece of fruit to compare size and she was about the same size as the pare she started eating. She also began to jump into my hand nonstop.
We soon separated the sister and brother Asher and Willow, and Willow was introduced to Opal. The divider was not the best and they quickly escaped through it and fought. Asher and Ember were put together as Ember was not pregnant, and Asher kept climbing over or chewing his way through and their was no fighting. Ember seemed a bit frightened, but the next morning, Asher and Ember were sleeping together, and Opal and Willow as well had begun to get along. A few months ago Willow had a litter of 7 total, 2 were stillborn. We actually guessed the genders correctly and we totally did not even identify for sure since the pups were too young, but 4 girls and a boy... Pied slate (runt)= Blossom (I kept her as she was the runt and I got attached) Pied slate = Fern slate= Iris burmese??? = Bloom burmese??? = Oakley who I also kept.
We found homes for the rest, and they take great care of them.
About a month and a half ago Ember had her first litter of 6. 4 girls, 2 boys. I chose P to be the theme for all of their names... here we go LOL Peter Piper Picked Peck--- naw I'm kidding.
pied dove=Piper (girl) Pied slate= Paige (girl) Pied slate= Path (boy) lilac= Parker Slate= Poppy (girl) argente golden=Posey (girl)
Well just before the 6 week rehoming mark, Ember had her 2nd litter of 7. This is my current litter, finally plenty of boys. 5 boys, 2 girls. I chose bird names for the theme. pied slate = Sparrow (boy) 2 boy slates =Wren and Raven, Wren being the runt, 3 pied doves, 2 girls, 1 boy, somehow they have slightly different markings thankfully the boy= Robin the girls are Meadow and Dove. then I have my favorite of any other gerbil I have ever had (unless I had an agouti LOL) Pied lilac= Lark.
And I woke up near noon and clearly she had enough time to mate again, but we took Asher out just in case. Posey and Piper are in with Mama Ember, and they help her a ton!!! They will carry some of the fast little rugrats back to the nest, or sit on top of them. Path and Parker are with Asher, all trying to get used to Oakley. The young boys are used to him, but Asher is not.
And out of all my litters so far, I have not gotten my agouti. I want one so bad, and I know they are common, but they are really pretty. I am thinking I will end up keeping a total of 4 someday, Lark + Oakley Blossom + agouti I hope. I might also let Oakley and Opal have a litter, and see if they end up with anything cool.
Ember had sweetened up a lot since she had litters, but Opal I try not to hold as she will nip me. Ember will too but not as often.
