Lol, actually that's a good theory about the wheel going round them, although running on the ground they could go just as fast, it doesn't curve up in front of them of course. But they're probably weird too!

Just got the small (8.2") wheel for the 20g tank; maybe a bit early to evaluate but it seems much better than the wheel I had (which was a replacement for a wire mesh wheel, out of an abundance of caution). *Very* quiet and sturdy; I hope he doesn't chew on it like the two did the Silent Runner I used to have in there. My goodness, how many wheels have I purchased? The Small used the exact same stand as the Medium; this makes sense for economizing production but means the Small doesn't take up proportionally less room than the Medium.

Are you going to present them in a line to your gerbils, and see which one they pick?

No, the Small is in the 20g, for the guy who lost his companion; the Medium is in the empty 40g I recently bought... I've been having trouble finding gerbils locally.

Well the medium wheel (10”) is too big for very young gerbils—they can’t deal with the momentum. I swapped the small and medium (which is really too big for the 20g) and the kids are doing better with the small.

Interesting, I don't recall my boys having any problems with their 10" wheel, although they were 8 weeks old when I got them. How young do you mean by young? And what do you mean they struggled with the momentum? If you mean they flipped themselves, that seems to be a Gerbil, Hamster's etc right of passage! (think I've used the right phrase! lol). My boys did that quite a lot early on, but they soon learnt to slow down more gradually, and later on they just hopped off if they wanted to stop dead. Quite cool, to see them hop off, then hop back on again seconds later with it still spinning and get straight back into their pace .

They had trouble getting started, and once there's motion they weren't getting enough traction to keep running and so were skidding all over the place. The older gerbil has no trouble with the larger wheel, and the kids are doing fine with the smaller one.
I don't know their precise age when I got them, but the pet store just got them the night before so probably just old enough to be separated from the mother.

Weird, before I lined their wheel, my boys had trouble accelerating (they needed to accelerate gradually, but that isn't their modus operandi) and stopping, but no problems in maintaining speed.
Trying to remember the earliest age that pups can be separated, is it 6 weeks? or 5?

What did you line it with... am I remembering something with cork? It might perhaps have been trouble accelerating and never quite getting there. The kids were tiny--when they climbed on my hand they were feather-light. When I took this pic I'd had them for three days:

They look really young there Scott. 4 or 5 weeks I think, so it's not surprising they had trouble with the wheel. Some wheels are also stiffer than others the same size.
