Hi. As gerbils are not a popular pet in my country, I have huge problems to find food for them. Can I offer them food suited for some other rodents? For example I can buy one of these 3 products, but I don't know if those are ok for them: Vilmie Rat FeedJR Farm Super Small Pet Food
JR Farm Feast for RatsDo you think it could suit them?

Food meant for other rodents can be sometimes be suitable for gerbils, as long as it meets their nutritional needs and has the right ingredients. With regard to the foods linked, I tried the JR Farm Super Small Pet Food once and I wouldn't recommend it at all. It's a mix of weird massive pellets, grasses and very few seeds. It's a food marketed to all small animals while being suitable for none. One thing you will find with rat foods is that they contain a higher quantity of cereals and grains compared to seeds, but gerbils really need more seeds. This is true of both the rat foods you linked. The JR Farm Feast for Rats looks slightly better. Are you able to get any of the following? - Gerri Gerbil- Versele Laga Gerbil or Versele Laga Hamster- Rodipet (they deliver to most countries in Europe) - the Bunny seed mixes. Their gerbil mix would be ideal but is difficult to find so you could use their dwarf hamster mix or their Syrian hamster mix- Other foods by JR Farm, for example their dwarf hamster food or their gerbil food. You might not be able to buy from the websites linked but you can search for the name of the food and see if anything comes up in your country.

Thank you. I will see what I can find. My problem is that if I order from outside my country (Croatia) I would peobably pay more for delivery, then for the food. So I must buy something here, but the offer is very bad.

Zooplus.de deliver to Croatia for €10, which is expensive, but perhaps you could buy several months' worth of food at a time? They have Bunny Gerbil. I find a 500-600g bag of that type of food can last about 2 months, and I have 4 gerbils.

I did try it last year and wasn't very impressed. It had lots of boring pellets and generally not much variety. I suggested it as it's better than the rat foods but a Rodipet or Bunny or JR Farm diet (but not the "Super Small Pet Food") would definitely be preferable options.

Yes, they also changed their dwarf hamster food and mouse food into more pelleted forms. I used to buy them for my harvest mice because of all the seeds and fruits - but now they are mainly processed extruded lumps - they aren't so fun or pretty.
They might still be 'nutritiously balanced' in that form - but it looks as boring as anything...
