Holy c**p that's too scary 0_0''''' Did you see my pics of Pepper when she did that? EXACT same ear as well Check inside his ear - Pepper has a lot of wax or something in there that's agitating her She has drops but goes spazzy if I remotely touch her ear AT ALL now - she even bit the bottle nozzle for a few minutes really deeply. I'm kinda relieved it wasn't my finger -_-'' Poor Pep, he has been in the wars How old is he getting to now?

It's cleaned up now, I think Max held him down and gave him a good scrub. It looks like there's a small growth right on the edge of his ear. I didn't know gerbils could get tumors there. It looks like he scratched it, it bled, and he scratched it some more. Pep will be 3 in just a month and a half. He's an old boy But not bad for a pet shop gerbil. Overall, he's healthy and happy, just much, much slower, and with cancer. He doesn't appear to be in any pain. In fact, if I put a treat in front of him, he'll beat the crap out of his brother in order to get to it. When he stops doing that, then I'll know it's time to throw in the towel. What's life without treats!

ON Friday, AndreaS15 was over, and she pointed out that Triscuits' ear was bleeding too! The SAME ear! Honestly I would have freaked out, if I hadn't read this post before it happened! he's fine now. No other problems, and I see no build up in his ear.... and it hasn't bled since

Ermm... I don't. It's never been a problem- not in any of my gerbils.

Pep's ear is bleeding again. This time, there is a darker stain on his fur, so I assume that it's bleeding a little harder. I can't figure out where it's coming from. I can't find the little growth that I saw earlier in the week--maybe he picked it off? It looks like he's got a little bald patch behind his ear, but I think I can see a similar bald patch behind the other ear.
Also, he's constantly scratching it with his back leg, which seems to indicate that he's uncomfortable.
How can I help him?

Blimey Nicole! that poor lad has been through it lately Is it particularily hot in that area - compared to his other ear? may indicate an infection or maybe a foreign object has gotten into his ear hole somehow If he's scratching it's obviously bothering him - poor thing. Maybe another visit to the vet is called for.... Sorry, not much help am I... Caroline

Sorry, not much help am I... S'ok, to some extent, there's not a whole lot you can do for these little guys. There doesn't appear to be any infection--I can't see any redness, swelling, pus, warmth, etc. I also can't see any foreign bodies or wax or anything like that. In fact, I can no longer tell where the blood is coming from. He is resting comfortably with Max. The two have stuffed their hut so full of cardboard and tissues that there's barely room for them--Pep's butt is hanging out the door. Imagine if I went to sleep like that in my apartment... LOL!

How weird Could it be an unrelated incident to last time? Could Max have nipped him inadvertantly in roughly the same place as when his ear was swollen before? Maybe overzealous powergrooming? Perhaps Max was trying to clean him up too much and started him bleeding again? Hope you can get to the bottom of this for him Caroline

Hey- Triscuit's ear is bleeding again too.... OY! Wonder why they do this. It's only ever been Tris' ear, and alway the left one...

Funny, it's Pep's left ear, too. It hasn't happened in a while... but... he scratches his ear often, sort of picks it with his back claws, and THEN he licks his toes! Totallly gross!!
Can you see if there's anything in her ear, like a scab or a little mass or anything?

I see nothing. And this is only the 2nd time it's bled. The first time was when Andrea was over.... been fine since, until just the other day.
