So, I’ve heard that it’s great to have a rock in a gerbil tank, as they like to use it to keep their claws from getting long, and as a bit of a look out spot! I love the idea, but where can I get a suitable and safe rock from?! Can I just take one from the garden and sterilise it somehow? Can I buy one online that is already sterilised and safe?
Thank you in advance! ❤️

I have just taken rocks from my garden, scrubbed them in hot water then left them to dry. Never had a problem.

Same. But I've never seen my gerbils use them for a manicure! I did once in their sandpen, but I think that was because it was in their way! I want to find a large flat pebble so they can wee on that instead of the wheel base frame!

I did buy rocks from a pet store (to my husbands dismay). I didnt want to go rock hunting outside in winter, and I did find the pet store sold some big, cool looking rocks that I maybe couldnt find myself. They were being sold as decor for reptiles or aquariums.
But yeah, I expect you could wash rocks from outside and use them without a problem.

I took a pretty hefty rock from my garden, cleaned it a little bit with some water but that’s it. My gerbils have never ever ever used it as a nail trim, they just spend their entire time covering it in bedding. But it’s nice to get one anyway just to make their housing a bit more interesting and natural.

I have 3 rocks in their topper so it doesn't get buried. I bought a bag of rocks at Home Depot to paint on but took a few of the unpainted ones and submerged them in boiling water for 20 mins and then scrubbed them with soap and water and they were cleaned. I have also used ones from my backyard but you have to make sure those are extra cleaned.

I got a big rock from the beach, cleaned it thoroughly and put it in their topper. Elsa especially likes to stand on it to get treats, and if I see their claws getting a bit long, I put small bits of mealworm on it to encourage them. Thanks
