Hello all,
just a bit of an interior design question as well as gerbil related!
My gerbil tanks are pretty large and wide, which means to save floor space I have one tank on the floor under a table and one tank on the table above, halving the floor space they take up. Has anyone ever had gerbils in a set up that is more tall or square in shape than it is wide to take up less floor space, whilst also retaining a good volume of space? I have seen the designs of the qute tanks but they are much much much smaller than my tank so wouldn’t consider these. There would have to be enough depth for deep bedding and lots of levels for them to explore so I assume most people have wide tanks also. Would be great to hear your thoughts!

Possibly off the charts a bit - and needs a bit of handy work - but how about converting a tall chest of drawers?
YEARS ago - I got given a free chest of drawers - 5 high - and in the days when I was creative and had a garage full of tools - I converted the whole thing into a giant tall enclosure with aviary wire front for my rats at the time (which only came in agouti or white to age it well!).
Anyway, I added in a tank that fitted in the bottom to hold all the substrate and attached batons to the side and made shelves and dangly bits. Not sure how you could make it into 2 seperate digging areas though, but a lot of people online seem to use wooden vivs stacked on top of each other (with holes and ramps between) - so potentially 2 x chests of smaller drawers that sit on top of each other so both have a sturdy base?

Wow that is so creative! I’ve googled your ideas and seen some examples of what you mean.
I will have a look at some furniture available that might be gerbil safe and see what I can do. Thank you!

This is one of my gerbil tanks: It's a 100cm tank (Living World Eco Habitat) with a DIY topper. My gerbils really like the extra vertical space. They were in a slightly longer tank (120cm) before but they're happier in this.

Possibly, but I have heard people say air holes don't give enough airflow. Something like that would be cool though if you could use mesh in some way? Love your tank LilyandDaisy

Thanks for this. I could adapt it since I have some mesh, just need to think about how. Or there is a cupboard with mesh doors like this: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/ivar-cabinet-with-doors-white-mesh-10482946/ Could it be ok for a pair if I added a tank to the bottom shelf.? Don’t know if it would be too dark for them cos the mesh wire is quite thick, or if it would be too small, hard to tell.

I'm not too sure, maybe? Someone else will have to comment on this!
It does only have one review though, and that review is 1 star!

I’ve had another look and think maybe a tall bookcase where the back was all mesh might work...

I love that tall bookcase - and only £40 too. That looks double height from my original one!
I would imagine with a tray, tank (only in the bottom one) or perspex section in the bottom of each tank (to prevent mess and chewing) and adaptations to the top section of each for something like aviary mesh would be fine.
It wouldn't potentially be as ventilated as a normal tank and topper against a wall - but if you aimed for more than half of the front to be wire (and potentially take out a strip at the very top of the back on each if it didn't cause too much structural change), and it wasn't in direct sun or next to a really hot radiator (both things that cause deeper tanks to 'sweat') it should be ok?
I do love a good project - but might be too much work for some?

How tall and wide are your habitats *exactly*?
What room space is available?
