Good afternoon,
I was wondering if anyone with expertise could correct me if I’m wrong.
I have had my 2 gerbils since they were pups. They look nothing alike and came from a really mixed group of little pups, which were all so different that I was sure they weren’t related. However, now I’ve had a look at the genetic codes, I was wondering if it’s possible they are sisters.
one is a grey agouti, the other is a spotted black gerbil, though I believe she is considered a spotted slate gerbil since she is a lighter black colour. She has white spots on her paws, a white neck and a white diamond on her head.
is it possible they could be related if the grey agouti had Aa agouti gene and my slate gerbil had aa and sp genes?
I think I may be wrong, because on reflection my grey agouti has wine eyes and my slate gerbil has black. I’m very confused!

Ha ha - noone said genetics were easy!
However, both a grey agouti and a black, or a grey agouti and a slate could be siblings (because slate is just black with the grey agouti gene).
Grey Agouti: A* C* E* P* uwd uwd self Slate : aa C* E* P* uwd uwd
self Black : aa C* E* P* Uw*
The spotting gene on top of any coat colour can lighten the colour - so a black spotted gerbil may appear lighter than a solid black gerbil. The spotting gene isn't part of the colour genetics - it sits on top of it.
However, even two agouti gerbils in a group or pair might not be related?
