Is aspen good bedding for gerbils? I know it doesn’t hold tunnels well but does anyone recommend using is for a different texture in a small section of the cage?

I've used Aspen for many years- Nepco, Kaytee and Fresh4Life and found them all to be okay to use, depends on the brand if it's dusty but i don't find what i've tried. I always put in the freezer for a few days, shake it and also let it air out in tins.

I personally layer it with paper bedding and hay. You can try to just do a smaller section for a different substrate, but I'd bet your gerbils are going to have different ideas.

I used to use Aspen, it was pretty good, I do prefer hemp but if you're only using it for a section of the cage it might be nice to do if you're using some kind of paper bedding as the main tunnelling section.
