Soo very sorry that Lily passed away today, hugs and know you did all you could for her and more- i'm sure she knew how much you loved her and tried to help her. I miss my Theo when he grew sick fast and then to watch him soo very ill and i couldn't get a vet for him was soo hard. It gets easier with time but still it's hard. Take great care. Tammy

I didn't know whether to start a new thread for this or not but something funny happened to Daisy (Lily's sister) today. She went very weak and floppy for a few minutes. She went to their house to lie down afterwards, and looked very tired, though she perked up slightly when I gave her a pile of treats. She's still in there, resting and gorging herself on treats.
It reminded me of the episodes Lily used to have. And Daisy did have that episode back in September when she choked on sand, and Lily's issues started with choking episodes too. The main thing that reminded of Lily was the way Daisy was positioned when I first noticed her. She was on the top of their house, not sitting on her feet like they normally would, but sitting on the base of her tail with her back feet sticking out, and her front paws were raised. Lily would often have her front paws raised in the same way during her episodes. It used to remind me a t-rex.
I'm worried she might have the same problem as Lily but I am somewhat reassured that if it is the same thing, Lily lived with it, for several months before she died. For most of that time she appeared well between episodes, and I think she still had a good quality of life up until the last couple of days. Lily ultimately died of fluid in the lungs caused by heart failure so I will know to look out for that with Daisy this time. If anything further happens to Daisy I'll make a separate thread for her but just thought I'd put this here as it seems like it could be linked.

Oh no , well I hope it isn't the same thing! Keeping my fingers crossed for her!
(Btw, if you do start another thread, could you link it here? In case I miss it )

Oh no. I wonder what it could be - I haven't ever seen one of mine sitting like that. How strange.

Daisy took several hours to recover from that episode but she's fine now. Lily used to recover more quickly but she was younger, and also, Lily was never exactly one to sit still and rest unless she absolutely had to.
Tilly was really upset and stressed by it, and only calmed down once Daisy had fully recovered.
I do actually have them in a smaller cage right now because I think Daisy is having trouble maintaining the entire cage + topper as her territory and that seemed to be causing her some stress. It's too many surfaces for her to keep adequately scent-marked. Too many nooks and crannies where invaders could potentially be lurking! I don't see any signs that Tilly is trying to take advantage of Daisy's advancing age yet, but I'm aware it's a possibility and I'm pretty sure Daisy is also aware it's a possibility, which is probably why she's worried. She seems so much happier in the smaller cage. Their cage is quite a difficult one for an older gerbil to navigate really. It's hard to know how to balance the needs of an older gerbil and a young hyperactive one, but I'm inclined to err on the side of keeping Daisy happy, and I can always let Tilly out for lots of free roaming if needed. If I were a gerbil I would much rather be a bit bored than be stressed and afraid. In the next few days I think I will move them back to the tank but withhold access to the topper for now, and see how it goes. Hopefully I can find a compromise that works for both of them and they'll be able to live together peacefully still. Perhaps they'll have the tank and no topper, or the tank and one floor of the topper.

Yes, indeed. Bored over anxious for sure - and like you say - adding enrichment in one smaller space doesn't put her under any extra worry.
I love the idea of reducing the scent-marking and control as I had to do that for my strangely over-dominant sister before. I hadn't thought about it on such a large scale before - but now you mention it I will certainly be more aware.

Daisy has had two more episodes of sudden faintness or weakness. One of them left her so weak she couldn't eat for a little while (despite wanting to). She does recover fully after a few hours and then gerbils around as normal, but she has a little less energy overall than she used to. I've made a new thread for her since clearly there's something going on.
