Hello! I volunteer at this horse barn and they have giant bags of horse bedding there. Right now I use a mixture of care fresh and hay, but I was wondering if wood shavings were okay to use for gerbils. Thank You! ![]() |

I used to always buy the bulk bales of kiln-dried pine wood shavings intended for horse sale. People also buy the bulk other horse substrates too - as they are only horse packaged as people with single gerbil clans often don't want a giant bale - they are the same identical product.
However, I am always cautious about the storage of any I buy - and the brands. I never buy loose or open bales - or from any large self-producing barns. I only buy reputable long-standing branded products with 'ingredients' clearly written and easy to find on the packaging or online.
Ideally where you can - the same bale that local pet shops use for their own pets (as then I know it doesn't make animal sick - otherwise they wouldn't keep using it, right?).
If you can store it well - it is an absolute bargain to buy that way!

Are you in the UK or US? This affects the type of pine that might be used and whether or not it's ok to use.
Even if you are in the UK, just be sure it is pine and not cedar.

aspen is best- some say Kaytee is good, i tried one bag but decided to go with Fresh4Life and my usual Nepco was out of stock for months.
