Hello! I have my two girls in a 15 gallon tank at the moment. (Going to get a bigger tank soon)I was wondering, how do you attach the water bottles to the glass? I have a metal holder that hangs over the side, but that results in the tip of the water bottle always buried under their bedding. How do you fix this?

I keep my water bottle now in a tank topper so that it never gets buried but I used to just have a metal holder. You can section off an area for a wheel, sand bath, and water bottle once you get a bigger tank but there really is no solution unless you have a ledge or platform you put it on or a tank topper. You can also take some super strong Velcro to attach the bottle to the side but unless you take the Velcro off there is no adjusting it. When are you getting a new tank? 15 gallons is way too small for gerbils. How many do you have in there?

I have two gerbils in it at the moment. I know it's small, we used to have a tank topper but it broke, so I'm looking into bigger tanks. how many gallons do you recommend for two gerbils?

I have a 29 gallon with a 10 gallon topper. If I had space I would get a 40 gallon breeder or a 60 gallon tank.

No smaller than 20g for 2; 40 would be much better. I don't know where you live, but I got a 40 gallon "breeder" tank (so called because it's long rather than tall) at Petco for $99; they had a 20% off sale bringing it down to $79. The lid was $24, also 20% off, so $100 total for both, with local taxes. Be warned: it quite heavy, and you can't grip it by the top frame. For my old 20g tank, I found a 4 oz bottle to be best; the Kordon Oasis bottle (with guard) worked fine: it's short enough that it stayed above the bedding. For the 40g I needed the 8 oz version of the same.

I want to get a 40 gallon, (using a tank topper was soo much work!) I just need to go to Petsmart!

AFAIK, Petsmart doesn't carry the 40 gallon breeder; this is the one I got from Petco. They also have a 40 gallon " critter cage" which is, to the best of my knowledge, the same tank plus screen for $35 more, but the separate lid is only $23 so you'd be paying extra for the "convenience." The lid can be trickier to find: it's this one.The description says "Imagitarium 50-Gallon Terrarium Screen" but if you look in the description it says "fits 40B or up to 50 gallon tanks." 40B is the 40-gallon breeder tank. The think I like about the sold-separately screen is that it folds in half along the length, making it easy to get inside without removing the whole thing.

Wait sorry for this but is 20 gallon long good for two gerbils? I’m wondering in case I can’t fit a 40 gallon.

20 gallons are fine but are the best with a topper. You can also look for a 29 gallon tank. I have one and I got it from Aqueon. It is basically a 20 gallon tank base but a few inches taller which is really good for bedding. On average I have 12-15 inches of bedding which is really good. I also have a 10 gallon tank topper from you & me. It is best to buy the tank during a $1 per gallon sale so you just have to keep a look out at a few different stores. It can save you quite a bit. If you buy the tank from PetCo on regular price it is almost $60 and for the $ per gallon it is $29. I got my tank from PetSuppliesPlus but I am pretty sure that PetCo also has a $ per gallon sale every so often. The topper is great but you need to make sure that one gerbil doesn’t claims the top and the other stays at the bottom. I keep my wheel in there along with food, sand bath, a water bottle, and water bowl. The sand bath takes up most of the floor but I also use a small bendy bridge and a tile from my old bathroom to cover up the mesh and do not use the ledges and ladder it came with. I use a Niteangel long bendable hanging bridge and bend it and it works great. I will upload a picture of my setup tomorrow. Thank you so much for this, but how do you prevent your gerbils from escaping since the 10 gallon tank topper is smaller?

You have 1/2 a lid and 1/2 a topper.
You have an important typo here - The topper is great but you need to make sure that one gerbil claims the top and the other stays at the bottom. I'm sure you meant to say 'doesn't claim'!

Thank you so much for this, but how do you prevent your gerbils from escaping since the 10 gallon tank topper is smaller? I bought a 20 gallon tank lid and then cut a hole a bit bigger than the topper opening and secured it with some zip ties. It stays very secure but I have to take the topper off to clean underneath it every once in a while. I also recommend getting some lid clips so they can’t lift the lid up.

I also recommend getting some lid clips so they can’t lift the lid up. Specifically for the instance of the cut-down lid/topper combo? I'd purchased clips for my 20g tank (without a topper) but I stopped using them. I can't imagine how the gerbils could get the lid off: first, the lid weighs probably 7 times what the gerbil does. Second, they can't get any leverage: there's no lower surface they can push against to lift the lid (the highest point within the tank is lower than they can stretch from to reach the lid) and if they jump, the most they can do is either bounce against the lid or cling to it for a moment. AFAIK clips are mainly for snakes, which can be several feet long and are essentially a giant muscle.
