Ear wax

Hi My oldest gerbil gets clumps of ear wax in one ear. So much is produced that it sticks his ear flap down and he gets bedding stuck to it like glue. Every few days I have to clean it out for him, which he really doesn't like. I dont know if this is coincidence or not but it is the same ear he had an ear infection when he was younger and still suffers from the head tilt on that side. Does anyone else ever have this problem? Any idea what causes it or if it can be treated, other than by me regularly cleaning it out?
Thanks

Is the wax a normal consistency and color? I don’t know too much about it but, I thought I’d ask. If it isn’t normal, and if it hurts him to clean it, I would say he probably has an infection or something. Try letting him clean it himself, and if he literally won’t, it probably hurts too much. Also, does his hearing seem normal to you? If it isn’t normal he could have far too much wax buildup and needs medical help, or the advice of a vet.

It looks like normal ear wax, just more of it/he wont clean it out himself. He doesnt seem to be in pain - he will let me touch it and pick at it. But I cant imaging that it is very comfortable when there is so much of it. Its been accumulating for several weeks now and he doesnt seem to be suffering in any other way. Its just annoying for both of us to have me clean it out and I dont understand why its only in one ear.

poor guy, probably due to his past ear infection, i don't know what else may help but maybe do it when it's sleepy and give him a treat so at least he sees it as a good thing instead of bad. If it gets worse or smells, i'd get him checked by a vet.
