Hello there,
I have two tanks at home but only have one pair of gerbils now. I am introducing my two single gerbils in my glass split tank. This leaves the larger tank, made of wood/plastic/mesh, empty for now. I may put them in this tank later if the split is successful but I’m worried the scent of the old gerbils ingrained in the wood will disrupt their clan. If I use a pet safe disinfectant on it a few times over the course of a few days, then give it a couple of weeks to air out, will this be enough to get rid of the smell, or will it never be safe to use again? Any advice would be so helpful.

Is it unfinished wood or some kind of water resistant wood? If the latter, you can probably wash it with soapy water and then maybe water and vinegar which should at least lessen any scents. I don't know of any way to reliably deodourise unfinished wood other than just leaving it for a few weeks. If it's unfinished you could consider painting it with a pet-safe paint, which will not only hopefully cover up the existing scents, but long term will render it much more water resistant and therefore easier to clean. Somebody recently told me about a paint manufacturer called Little Knights which is mainly as a paint for toys and children's items but it's also pet-safe.

The water and vinegar is a fab idea, I’ll try that. If not I’ll research the pet safe paints! Thank you.

Try hydrogen peroxide (i.e., from a supermarket or drug store). It's an effective deodorant, and it quickly decomposes into oxygen and water. And it's cheap.

That’s great, thank you. I always have wooden things to clean so this is all helpful.

Remember, though, that H2O2 is an oxidizer (which is why it deodorizes) so it'll lighten/whiten colors.

Steam cleaner, it disinfects through heat, and cleans through...well it blasts stuff right out. It's the best way to clean wood and requires no chemicals.
I mean one of those little handheld steam cleaners btw. They're also great for bathrooms and kitchens.

That’s fab, I’ll have a look on the Argos website for one! Oh btw, 140C is the target temp. Not all of them can reach that. Sorry, forgot to mention that.
