Hi! I found some shredded aspen in the reptile section of pets at home and wondered if this would be safe for my gerbils? I was planning to mix it with paper bedding for burrowing and also doing a small shallow section for where I put the wheel as it makes more of an even surface. It is not shavings and instead looks like short bits of fine hay (dust has been extracted from it so that doesn’t worry me) but I was a little bit worried that they may get splinters or something similar? If anyone has any experience with this kind of bedding or knows whether it is safe I would love to know as I am getting my gerbils tomorrow! Thank you so much xx

Yes, it is safe. I used to buy it in the 14kg bags but I found it quite dusty. The aspen in smaller packets may be less dusty though.

Xx I haven't used it myself, but lots of people use hemp such as Aubiose. I think there are other brands too. I use a paper bedding (Fitch) mixed with lots of hay and I find that works well.

Thank you so much xx In general, reptiles are very delicate animals and sensitive to many things, more so than gerbils, so if something says "for reptiles", you can be sure it won't harm your furry friends (well...I mean, as long as it's something gerbils can use/be around ). I usually get sand and cork or decorations that are made for reptiles so I feel safe that it's ok for my gerbils to use them. As for aspen, I was looking at that too, I ended up getting the shavings because...it was cheaper and reptile stuff is usually more expensive, but go for it if you can, it should be great! Since this reply is a little late...how are you liking it so far?

I use the larger bags of Aspen from P@H and mix it with Kaytee clean and cozy and care fresh. It's been good and hasn't ever caused any injuries in our gerbils. I give them hay as well, adding more on a daily basis. It all works well for tunnelling and I haven't noticed that it's overly dusty, but then I haven't got anywhere near the bottom of the bag. There is a lot less dust compared to the wood shavings I previously used from P@H.
