Hi, I have a little bit of a dilemma.. I can only pick up my gerbils early tomorrow morning (unless I wait another week +) and the bespoke enclosure that I am having made for the. will be ready tomorrow morning as well but it sounds like I will have it a few/ around 2 hours later than the gerbils (the man making the enclosure is only down the road though). I have a carrier and I also have a small animal cage with a shallow plastic base and metal top ( I know that the small cage is not ideal for gerbils, I only got it as someone in my village was getting rid of it for free and I thought that it would be good for when I clean out their big enclosure) which I can put the gerbils in. Should I collect them in the carrier, transfer them to the temporary enclosure and then to the actual enclosure or would that be too unsettling and distressing for them? What would be the least stressful? Should I just keep them in the carrier for an hour or two (that just seems too small though ahh)? Any advice/ opinions would be greatly appreciated Xx
also, thank you so so much for all the help I have received from this forum, it has been so useful and will hopeful mean my gerbils will have the best life possible!

A few hours in a carrier will be fine. It would also be fine to transfer them to the cage for that time, and this would mean you can give them water and more things to shred (shredding cardboard is good stress relief for gerbils), which gives you a bit more time to get everything right with the enclosure. Personally, if collecting the free cage wouldn't be too far out of my way, I would use the cage, but if not, I would just keep them in the carrier. Mine have to spend 3-4 hours in a carrier whenever I clean their tanks out and they're fine. They're unsettled at first but after 30 minutes or so they settle down to sleep.
