Hello there,
I have a female who has been in several successful pairings.
her first, when she was a very young female, was with a much older female who she loved.
when the older female died, she was in a pair with an older neutered male.
when he died, I paired her with a female of similar age. This didn’t work, since she was the subordinate But kept squeaking at the other gerbil and there was a bit of chasing after 2 weeks that did not look good.
im now pairing her with another female of similar age. They have lived together in the same room for 2 years, but both recently lost their partners so I’m trying to pair them they’ve been in the split tank 2 weeks. I’ve tried two short meetings in one side of the split tank and both times she has laid down flat for the other female to groom her. The other female has been grooming her, and whilst she is dominant, she’s very docile. All has looked good so far, no chasing. However, I saw Her squeaking at the other gerbil again today. Now, she is a squeaky gerbil generally, very much one for squeaking to say “move over” or “get out of my way” even when she’s in a stable pair.
how can I know whether she is being hostile or not?
