Hi everyone, I just want to let everyone know that Merry has gone downhill in the last day. I saw her last evening not looking herself and didn't think much of it, this morning she's not eating, she's got diarrhoea and just wants to sleep. I've got Pippin with her, keeping her warm and got strawberry mush and water in case she perks up, which I'm pessimistic about. She's sleeping now, I don't think she'll be with me much longer, I don't think there's anything I can do, she probably won't make it to the vets if I try to take her and I don't know what they'd do. I'm just going to make her last hours as pleasant as they can be. I'm sorry if this is upsetting to read, I just wanted to let everyone know.

So sorry to hear this gerbilord. I think you're doing all the right things and I hope she'll be comfortable whatever happens.

Oh Merry... Poor girl. Agreed with LilyandDaisy, you're taking care of her so well, and I'm sure Pippin will be an amazing sister and cuddle her lots.

Thank you everyone for the support, I'm very happy to say she has recovered really well. She gave me a massive scare to the point that I was planning what to do with Pippin and if I should get her a friend. But after about an hour or so of sleeping she perked up and started eating strawberry mush. After that her appetite got better and she started eating mealworms and pine nuts. she's lost lots of weight (probably overnight) so I'm overfeeding her on treats for the next few days to try and get her more stable. I've checked on her twice since putting her back in her cage and both times she was very responsive and looking normal. It's honestly a wonder how she went from very ill to cheerful and energetic. Her poo seems to be normal again, I'm going to be monitoring her over the next few days pretty much constantly and if there's any more sign of illness we're going straight to the vets in case they can do anything. But for the moment I am much more optimistic than I was this morning. Thankfully she seems to be quite a resilient gerbil!

I must admit I had a feeling of dread when I saw you had updated the thread but I'm so glad the update is a good one.
Like when humans have had diarrhoea, I would just offer her lots of easy to digest foods over the next few days.

Go Merry! I was the same, I was scared when I saw you updated, but that's a huge relief. Hopefully she stays that way.

Merry hasn’t got any worse, she’s recovering really well. I’ve put food in her nest area as well as all over the cage, I am thinking she might be having a harder time finding scattered food as she is getting a bit older so that could explain the weight loss. I’m still not entirely sure what caused the weird illness but I don’t think there’s any chance of it coming back as it’s been a few days since I saw any “symptoms”. Her stools are hard again which is a huge relief. Pippin also feels quite scrawny so I’m trying to get them both chunkier, not *fat* but… solid.

Thank you, it's a huge relief for all of us! :)
They're a bit less than 2.5 years old.
