As the title says, where do you guys buy your toys or the supplies to make them?
I do make the majority of my boys' toys myself out of cardboard, but I feel like every time I need or want something made of wood, it gets very expensive, very fast, and it's hard to know what kind of wood you are actually getting, since most of it is actually plywood (or the wooden toys I find at pet stores are bad and splintery).
I'm in the US, but any tips are welcome!

I haven't made things in a while--not since prices went buts--but I generally use a hardwood like poplar--when possible, remnants from something else I was making. I would definitely NOT use plywood, as the layers are glued together with formaldehyde-based adhesive.

I usually get their toys at PetSmart or Amazon. I really have only gotten a grapevine wood off of Amazon since I usually don’t order from there but PetSmart will have some good chews. I got a new chew today from Pet Supplies Plus or I get some branches off of my friends apple tree and clean it and trim it or during fall and winter will collect pine cones and sanitize them. My gerbils also love toilet rolls. Usually I give them just as they are but occasionally will stuff with hay and wrap with a piece of paper and tie with some gerbil safe string.

Another great toy that you can make yourself is to stuff a toilet paper roll with hay. I like to hide a few treats in the hay so my gerbils can have fun finding it. They also like to pull all the hay out of the roll and chew it. Usually for store bought toys, I look on Amazon or Petsmart. Make sure to get them toys only made of wood or something edible like hay. Plastic toys are not good.

Thanks guys. I do this already, but I was trying to find a supply store (online, US) that sells wood and that maybe some of you have already tried. I know the main ones, but they're always out of what I'm looking for, plus they tend to not be exactly cheap. I might have to wait for some sales!

For hardwood boards I just use Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can buy by the foot and I doubt you’ll find cheaper.

I just tried out canadianpetconnection.ca and after having a problem at checkout they gave me a 15% off code, very nice customer service. They let me put in a note to the courier which in my case is great since my building has two entryways. They have a large selection of chew toys to choose from,I recommend giving them a look. 🙂
