I noticed a small sore in my boys' ear a few days ago, he wasn't bothering it but i still put some manuka honey on it daily. I woke up earlier today and find he has dried blood below his ear and this sore has bled quite alot, poor boy. He doesn't seem to be scratching it at or seem bothered by it- his nails are quite long so think he just caused it with his nails. If it keeps bleeding and doesn't heal i will get him into the vets but not sure what they can do other than charge me alot for antibiotic ointment (that is what i was given for another pet with a sore), so will try what i have and see if that helps and then ask for antibiotics if this doesn't heal it. I am worried about him and will watch for any signs it's getting worse or bothering him. Thanks for any help, usually i help others but need help myself.

If it isn't just a scratch - I would always assume an aural cholesteatoma for bleeding ears - although they don't always cause irritation this is normally what it ends up looking like.
Hopefully it clears up when this eather cools down a bit and we all get back to normal...

it's on the inside edge of his ear so not right in his eardrum, which is good as it's easier to treat and isn't bothering him, looks better today but will watch it to see if it changes. It looked like a tiny pink piece of skin, like a very tiny skin tag but not sure if they bleed? thanks for replying Betty. it's not as hot here in Canada but it was 3 weeks ago.

Bubbles had this and it was an aural cholesteatoma as Betty has mentioned. It sounds as though it's a similar placement and did look like a skin tag to start with. What I would warn you about was that her sister wouldn't leave it alone. It got caught once early on, and there was a bit of bleeding, but she was ok for a coupe of weeks. Unfortunately I came downstairs one morning and found quite a lot of blood splashed everywhere. She would squeak when her sister came near trying to groom her. I had to split them up for the day, whilst we waited for out vet appointment. As the pain meds weren't working, and she'd deteriorated rapidly, it was time. I wonder whether I should have taken her early to try and get it removed as they can operate on some. I'm not sure it would have saved her as she also had a very fast growing abdominal tumour, but the ear definitely came up first and I think it would have been accessible to operate. It's hard to know if the other tumour could have been secondary. That said, I hope it is just a scratch and nothing more sinister.

soo sorry to hear about Bubbles, i am going to watch it and if it gets worse, go to the vets. I"m not sure if it is a tumour, am hoping it's not as he is only 2 years and 3 months but if he doesn't have any other lumps, then he could live a long time with it depending how it goes. Theo is alone as i had to separate him from his brother last year but he seems to be leaving it alone so hope it will heal or not get worse.

Theo isn't well, i woke up early and found him not well- i think it may be a stroke- he has his eyes closed, wobbly when he tries to move and is lethargic, plus cool so i put some paper towels on him and will hold him in my hands when he seems abit better. I"m trying all i can and trying to get him to eat,he seems to want to try but can't. i have some tiny pieces of carrot in water on a small spoon and am also trying to feed it to him. I will call the vets. What else can i try? i want to try everything to give him a chance and am trying to remain hopeful as it's just over 2 so not old. help!

I'm so sorry to hear that Theo has declined further, catnut . Bubbles was similar but because it was in the ear it did affect her balance. It makes it difficult for them to move/coordinate which affects their eating and drinking, so it could still be aural cholesteotoma and not necessarily a stroke. Bubbles declined quite rapidly at the end and I just had heat pads (the kind that you use to warm your hands which I then put in a sock so that they would chew on the sock rather than the pad), which she always chose to sit on. I also gave pureed fruit/baby food pouches, as well as soft fruits - she would still manage a raspberry even if she wasn't eating much else. We had meds (gabapentin and metacam I think) for end of life care, whilst she still had some quality of life. It is hard to see them suffering, especially whilst waiting for a vets appointment when there is very little you can do in the meantime.

Oh no - poor litle man.
Usually I got for a warm/cool place on offer nearby for them plus I scatter super easy to lick up food within easy reach around them. Things like sunflower hearts, nut flour and kale.
I have had several animals recover from such a spell as though nothing ever happened - and sometimes these things are never explainable or identified. All very frustrating.
Hope it goes/went well at the vets.

sadly he declined yesterday afternoon and passed away. I now think he had an ear tumour as i did some research online. I called vets to get him PTS but they were just closing and one wouldn't even put a very ill gerbil to sleep, ugh, it's soo annoying when he needed help i couldn't help him. I held him and held his paw and thankfully wasn't for long. I miss him, he wasn't 2 1/2 years yet. I have his brother Tristan and Kirby so they will get me through this bad time.

So sorry to hear that catnut , at least he's resting peacefully now. Btw what's with that vet refusing to put a gerbil to sleep?! I hope you gave them an ear bashing!

thanks, he is deeply missed and i'm in shock. I did feel very upset they could not help me, i thought vets could help with PTS even if they don't treat them, so left feeling helpless, i should've got angry but as they are the only vet i can get to that treats gerbils i'm stuck having to stay calm. They are expensive too and they never have put small animals first even though they have vets that treat them. the other vet is a newer vet and only see cats/dogs so guess they can't do the dosage and remains. Does anyone know if there is a good website about ear tumours that may help me understand how this happened and why? I need answers to feel a bit better that i couldn't have done anymore for him. i need to call to cancel my appt. but want to make sure my other boys' don't need a visit, Kirby got out of his small carrier last night and i was worried he could've injured himself but seems like all is well, acting and being normal, although i hurt my knee bending to try to catch him, he's fast even at almost 3!
