We noticed last night that Misty wasn’t herself, she seemed very lethargic and when I checked on her this morning she was very cool to the touch and hardly moving, also showing no interest in her food. I took her to the vet that said she is very raspy in her lungs and it’s possibly pneumonia. I’ve got two lots of medicine that is administered twice a day for seven days. He told me that if there is no improvement in 72 hours to take her back but the kindest thing would be to euthanise her 😢 she’s only around 18-20 months old. Any good advice of what I can do to help her whilst the antibiotics kick in?!

How sad... good luck. One of mine, years ago, just suddenly died at several months less than 2 years old. I found her fallen over beside the wheel. Some of them just aren't built to live even 2 years, not that yours won't.

sorry to hear about Misty, don't give up yet but she will need to eat and drink so do tempt her every 2-4 hours with food right in front of her, oats and sunnies not in the shell, easy to eat foods, and maybe use a small bowl if she can't drink from her bottle. you can try baby food but also make your own applesauce with just warming up mushed apples with some water and let it cool down. she needs to sleep as well and keep her warm- ripped up paper towels. Fingers crossed the meds. will help her.

Thanks for the responses. We’ve managed to give her medicine again this morning. We have Baytril and also an anti inflammatory medication. We’ve noticed this morning that she has slightly more energy but has also started clicking, which she wasn’t yesterday. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 She improves

I’ve just had a thought! I was given a bunch of flowers by my boss last week - gladioli. They were the other side of the room to her tank and they were wilting today so I’ve binned them. It just occurred to me that was an environmental change - could the pollen have caused the infection?

i'm not sure about the flowers. it will probably be at least another day of meds. and watching for any other signs to tell if she will improve- just keep tempting her with food/water and some veggies to keep her hydrated. Fingers crossed for her.

Update: Day 3 medication given. Misty seems slightly more active when we get her out to give the medicine. We have noticed this morning that her eyes are half shut and are slightly gunky and red. I’m assuming with antibiotics this should also clear?

gerbils can get mucous when not feeling well, half closed eyes are due to not feeling well. Just keep feeding and make sure she has something moist if she can't drink.

We’ve completed the antibiotics and anti inflammatory medicine and she is definitely moving better and is now eating and drinking a bit. She’s also started to wee and poo again which she hasn’t done for a few days. However, she is still very lethargic and has lost around 10g in weight during this time. The vet said if she didn’t get better in three days to take her back to have her put to sleep. She has improved but still isn’t 100% What should I do? Shall I continue with the antibiotics a bit longer? Do I go to the vet again to see if there is any other medication? When he checked her he said everything else was ok (heart and body condition) it was just her breathing. Is it just going to take a little longer for her to recover?

i would call the vets, say she is better but still lethargic (that could be due to not eating as much- is she eating her normal food or are you giving her wetted food or whatever she will eat?) how is she breathing? just get her to eat as much as you can, put it infront of her or feed her from a spoon, sometimes they will eat more this way. I wouldn't give up, ask if longer meds. or different meds. may help? fingers crossed she just needs more time.

Thank you. It’s just the breathing that’s the issue. It’s like the slightest thing exhausts her so she sleeps a lot. I have an appointment with the vet but not until Thursday - soonest they could get us in.

do you still have meds. to give her or are you out? if you have some and the vet said it was okay to do that, although i would anyway as she needs something, i would give her some until you can get her there. keep her warm enough and feed/water for her when she is awake and hope they can help her more on thurs.-enjoy each day with her, take care
