Are the wood items (buckets, boxes, houses, etc.) from craft stores like Michael’s and Hobby Lobby safe for gerbils?

Most wood from the craft store is birch wood, so I would say that it’s ok as long as the wood isn’t dyed or stained with any color or chemicals. I would also make sure to check over the pieces of wood for splinters before giving it to your gerbils. (If there are rough spots then you can just use some sandpaper to sand it smooth)

Maybe not such a good idea. I was in Hobby Lobby this past summer and saw an adorable wooden house there. My first reaction was, "WOW! My gerbils would love this!" My second (smarter) reaction was, "1-This adorable house will become an eyesore after twenty-four hours in the gerbil cage, and it will be gone after a week, and 2-let's face it, my gerbils will be just as happy with an empty tissue box."

Haha! Good point! Anything in my gerbils cage rarely lasts a few hours!
