I know that hamsters prefer enclosures with more items filling it up so it is more crowded. Are gerbils like hamsters in this way or do they prefer more empty enclosures?

Hmm, that's a good question, but possibly a mixture of the 2, I don't mean some stuff evenly placed around the cage, but put around in patches with clear paths for them to run from one end of the cage to the other (more or less). Partly so they can make a quick escape to their burrow/hide, partly so they can run the longest distance possible in the cage just when they feel like it. I suggest that because that's sort of how my boys end up arranging the tank themselves

I agree with Markpd, I like to bury hidey houses and bendy bridges in my gerbil tank, and they always have a blast digging them up. You can put in a many as you want, but if you add more then 3 or 4 houses, (it depends on your tank size) it could restrict their tunneling. Gerbils love to totally “remodel” their cages every day, so it doesn’t really matter where you put things. I often wake up in the morning to find a whole new tank setup! Although, it might be a good idea to leave a path for your gerbils so that they can run from one side of the cage to the other, as Markpd said.

Yes, gerbils like clear paths in their enclosure so I wouldn't crowd it as much as a hamster cage. They'll bury and/or destroy anything they think is superfluous so you'll often end up with a fairly open tank layout. I think they like to keep their burrow entrances in view at all and they don't like lots of clutter that will slow then down when they need to make a quick escape.

I also bury my gerbils houses, and they always like digging them up or digging tunnels to the entrances.

Yes, unlike hamsters I find gerbils bury their stuff often. Give them a clear path but they also like to climb on things too. They will chew all of their wood toys so they can fit them into their burrow "design". My first gerbil is quite the engineer!
