My new platforms that I made recently are quite up high and my gerbils can easily reach the top of their tank and the little plastic rim that does along the edge. They are constantly chewing this. In my last tank I cut it off and I will have to do this again since it has been keeping me awake at night but is there any reason that they would be doing this? It’s not from lack of space since they have a 55 gallon tank, they have a wheel, lots of hides and I have given them paper rolls to chew on also.

Mine always try to chew the rim. I think they must just like the taste or texture of the plastic. Mine chew it less if they have toys and things distracting them but if they can reach it they'll chew it. I moved all my taller things to the middle of the tank so the rim was harder to reach and if I see them chewing it I tell them no and push them off.

Mine did the same thing, so I shortened the legs. The platform's legs, not the gerbils'.

I think they might complain Btw, a raised roof is another possibility.
