Hi all, soon I will be travelling ~3 hours by car taking my animals with me. I have a couple of questions before we go. Firstly, how comfortable are gerbils with long car journeys? Will Pippin be happy in a travel cage for so long? Secondly, what travel cages are recommended? Will this be ok? Carrier cage link It just seems very cramped to me, but I’ve never travelled with gerbils before so maybe it’s fine? Thanks. :)

I once drove three hours with some gerbils to deliver them to my aunt. I just put them in a ten gallon tank with their stuff and took out the water bottle. There were suitcases and things around it, so they didn't wobble. They seemed ok and even got out of their house to look around a little.

Brilliant, glad it’s not too long for them. :)

I don't think 3 hours is too long and the carrier linked (the 30cm size, I wouldn't recommend the smaller one for a long journey) is an ok size. The Rosewood equivalent product actually has a really convenient round hole in the lid which you can sit a Classic water bottle in. I would bring plenty of cardboard to keep her distracted but she'll probably go to sleep after a little while.

I looked for, but couldn't find, a video of a gal who put her gerbs in a plastic carry case (much like the one you referenced) while she cleaned their cage, and they chewed a hole in it. If memory serves, they didn't have time to make it big enough to escape, but I think 3 hours would be enough. If I were you, I'd want someone to keep an eye on them during the journey. Escaped gerbils in a car would be...problematic.

Great, thanks for the link and advice, I’ll be sure to bring cardboard and her nesting bedding so she feels cosy. I think I will use a slice of cucumber for hydration instead of a water bottle as I worry about the bottle dripping a lot in the car.

Pippin will be next to me the whole journey so I can keep an eye on her and I'll give her plenty of toys to keep her busy so hopefully we'll have no escapee rodents. Shame that the carrier isn't so reliable.
