So currently I have in my bedroom my male pair and they make some noise at night but not enough to keep me awake too long. I also have a trio of females in another room. Both groups are in twenty gallon tanks. I made a topper which I put on the boys cage but take off at night because they make too much noise with it. I want the girls to have more space because I know twenty gallons is not ideal for a trio. However, I can only use the topper in my bedroom due to the other area having a shelf over it. I am worried that if I switch the girls into my room they will make too much noise at night. Do you think I should keep the cages how they are or try switching them? I suppose I could switch them back if they were making too much noise?

Have you changed them around yet? Are you aware what hours each clan are more active? Our males are lazy boys and sleep most of the day whereas our females are always on the go during the day and seem to bed down for most of the night. It might be worth checking before you make any moves as it may be an indication of noise level. I can't help you with whether 3 females would be noisier than a pair though. The other consideration if that if you do change the topper over to the girls you will need to give it all a very thorough clean as the last thing you want is a declan because the girls can smell the boys scent and it causes a ruckus. Do you let the gerbils have any playtime/free roaming? Sometimes this can be a good interim measure if you are worried about the size of their cage.

No, I haven't changed anything yet. I think the boys are usually awake in the afternoon and evening. I'm not sure about the girls because they're in the other room so I don't watch them as much. They don't really have any free roaming time but I play with them in their cage. I'm thinking maybe I will just try putting the girls in my room with the topper and seeing how it goes

How did it go?
And if it didn't work out, can you not get a bigger cage for the trio?
