If you do end up getting a larger tank or making a linmon cage it might not fit on the ledge still. You would need to measure it out. I think the linmon cage is over 500 square inches.

Yeah I decided I won’t be using the ikea tables. The cage I’ll be making is going to be either 50 or 57x13x17 (inches).

This is off topic but do you know if bitterroot forest wood shavings are safe for gerbils? It says kiln dried but not sure which wood it’s made out of. I get it at Murdoch’s.

Probably safe since it's kiln dried, unless it seems dusty or smells strongly. No idea about how well it would work though, I've never used wood shavings

Maybe you could make a bin cage? Use a big plastic bin with wire mesh over the lid. You'd have to find a bin with no ridges on the inside. That also might make it lighter so there wouldn't be too much strain on the ledge.

Okay, just wanted to make sure! Using a bin would hard because there’s of limited options that would work for me.

Hi again! I saw on another post about your tank topper and decided that I might go with that instead. Building a whole new cage seemed to be more different than I thought. How did you connect your tank topper to your tank? And where could I buy that tank topper?

For my topper, I used a birdcage. It was conveniently the same length of my tank so I used aquarium clips to hold it on. I have paper and cardboard covering part of the floor so they don't hurt their feet on the bars. They make a lot of noise in it, so I take it off at night.

When I first got my gerbils, we also bought a pet shop cage, which I still use today if I have to transport them over longer distances. I used the cage topper of that on top of a large plastic bin, and I'm currently waiting for a new wheel to arrive for them to put in the top

Hmmm, I can't seem to find the thread. Markpd I'm pretty sure you had a part in the thread, do you remember? Sorry Pipsqueak, somehow I didn't get a notification for this, I was in that thread, but I can't remember whose it was. Seems this isn't an option for the op anyway.
Btw, re using plexiglass for cages, it's ok as long as gerbils can't get to the edges to chew it. With the perspex cage height extension I'm planning for my new tank, it'll be protected at the bottom by being directly in line with the glass (hopefully!), and on the top it'll have the mesh lids.

Hi again! I saw on another post about your tank topper and decided that I might go with that instead. Building a whole new cage seemed to be more different than I thought. How did you connect your tank topper to your tank? And where could I buy that tank topper? I bought the You & Me topper from PetCo. I connected it to the lid by placing the topper on top and marking how large the hole was and then took wire cutters and cut the lid to have a slightly larger square than the topper (so they don't rub up against it and cut themselves.) Then I used some small zip ties to attach the topper to the lid in the four corners. I got the PetCo brand topper on sale, I think it was $30 but now the price has gone up to nearly $50. There are multiple other brands such as PetSmart which this one is significantly cheaper but I have never used this one. It has a slightly different shape, it's a box shape so you might want to see if your wheel will fit into it, it's 10.5 inches tall so a 10 inch wheel might not fit. Wire is not as big of a deal for gerbils feet like it is for hamsters but I still recommend covering the floor and using a different ramp to make the topper accessible. I bought a niteangel bendable bridge and bent it to look like a staircase. To cover the floors I originally had used hay mats (something similar to this, I got this brand but it was a smaller size.) That was a big mistake. I used them for quite a while but my gerbils would chew them and the hay would go everywhere, on the lid, on my floor. It was a mess. I wouldn't recommend it. So I ended up then using various things to cover the floor. I used a small bendable bridge which covered most of the floor left to the entrance and for the inch or so that wasn't covered I used clean rocks. I then used a piece of tile my friend gave me. The majority of it was just covered by their wheel and their sand bath dish.

Okay! I bought the topper today and put it on. I love it! Definitely was the right decision to make and now my gerbils have a lot more room to dig around. Thanks so much for your help! (:
