So since I've become a gerbil owner, I've found myself getting strange looks for the following behaviors:
Buying cocktail napkins at the dollar store. "Having a party?" "No, they're for my gerbil."
Collecting small bits of veggies in the produce section of the grocery store. "No, I'm not fond of kale, it's for my gerbil."
Sorting through the recycling at my condo, looking for cereal boxes. "No, I didn't lose anything, it's for my gerbil."
Pricing plexiglass. "How many gallons of water does it need to hold?" "Um, none. It's for my gerbil."
"Hey, there's a hole in the back of your shirt." *Sigh* "It's from my gerbil."
Anyone else needing to explain strange behaviors?

I do have to explain the holes in my shirts! One of mine just loves to sit on my shoulder and sneak a chew. Whenever I get drinks or ice cream from a restaurant we ask for a cardboard drink carrier. Or if my friend is getting a coffee I ask for the cardboard sleeve. They're always very confused about why I want so many of those cardboard sleeves!

Haha lol. I’ve given up trying to keep my clothes chew-free and I’ve just got used to being scruffy wherever I go.. The sad thing is no-one questions it.

I went shopping the other day and didn't enter a single pet shop and I still managed to come back with a hide, some water dishes and mini pumpkins for the gerbils and hamsters. The hide was a pumpkin thing from Flying Tiger. They called it a snack bowl but I'm not really sure how you would put snacks in it and it's clearly better used as a small animal hide. The water dishes were also from Flying Tiger. They're tealight holders, but they're the perfect size for water dishes, and only 50p each.

Yea, I can't see how snacks would stay in that, unless you laid it on its back! (although I pre-empted any water questions by saying it was for Gerbils upfront). Collecting loo roll tubes is another one!

I guess that's an advantage of my boys being averse to be handled then!

So true! I make tiny salads for the gerbils (veg, fruit and sometimes some seeds) and always laugh at myself because I don't put in as much effort when I make salads for myself, despite the fact they couldn't care less what it looks like. It's the life having gerbils Love the Flying Tiger hide LilyandDaisy! I'll have to have a look in there soon, see if I can re-purpose anything for the gerbils

I remember going to Home Depot trying to find aluminum C-channels to make a split tank and I couldn't find them so I asked someone. She wasn't sure and asked what they're used for... "I have no idea what normal people use them for, I'm using them to make a divider for my gerbil tank". She found that unusual lol.

Haha! My friends often ask me why I save all of my toilet paper tubes and why I stash cardboard next to my gerbil tank.

LilyandDaisy, shopping for rodents - fun! I too have tealight water bowls for my boys. What are mini pumpkins? Actual safe-to-eat tiny pumpkins?
And glad I'm not the only one who's sacrificed clothing to their gerbil. I thought Scooby was whispering sweet nothings in my ear one evening until I realized he'd just been chewing a big hole in the shoulder of my shirt. Now I have a dedicated, aerated scooby-shirt.

Yes, they're just really small pumpkins. They're safe to eat but they might not taste very nice because they're bred for small size at the expense of flavour. It's the same with the normal size carving pumpkins you can buy, they don't tend to taste good. People use them for decoration. I put them in the gerbil tanks for them to climb on/chew/eat but they mostly ignored them.

Wow! I really want a small pumpkin now. I think I missed the pumpkin boat though. Pretty sure pumpkin season is over here. Love the look of that hide LilyandDaisy my hamster wants one.
