This is an absolute great thread. I have my two boys right now in a 20 gal because I just adopted them from a person who , in simple words, got tired of them. She was going to take them to the shelter but my wife heard about it and went straight to her house and asked for them. We are now proud gerbil parents of two boys: Choco and Late ... yes, at least she was clever at naming them hahaha, love the names. Anyway, I am looking for a new tank because I want to build them a wonderful BIG home, this is the first time I have gerbils in my life, so big question, does this terrarium looks like a good idea? It has mesh in one side but it's tinny mesh, still, would that be problematic? www.amazon.com/dp/B08L6GCTPK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08L6GCTPK&pd_rd_w=KahZI&pf_rd_p=887084a2-5c34-4113-a4f8-b7947847c308&pd_rd_wg=QT4V1&pf_rd_r=4SNY5G1AX7KBYB66S685&pd_rd_r=c126d7c2-e71e-4fbf-9aef-6db40e739819&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFOS0tHQVFFWkhDREsmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4MjI0MTQxT1JBU05JWURRTjdLJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAyNTYxODYxSzk3N1pUQ0tMRDJDJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==Thanks in advance for the advice -Mark It looks pretty good to me. I don't think the mesh on the side would be a problem, but you would probably have to figure out how to cover those plastic joining parts. My similar 30 gallon reptile tank had plastic inside below the doors, but I was able to cover it with hardware mesh. Plastic isn't good for gerbils, and you definitely wouldn't want the tank to fall apart if they chewed too much. Also for future questions, you will probably get more answers if you just create a new thread for it

Don't you reckon the mesh on the side would leak bedding?

Don't you reckon the mesh on the side would leak bedding? It looked to me like pretty fine mesh? I don't think it would leak a whole lot unless the bedding was powdery or something

I guess it depends on the bedding, some with larger chunks might not, although after it's been chewed I reckon some still would? Although I think some with smaller bits from new would, e.g hemp. Anyway, there's no need to get the one with side mesh as there's a version available with side glass. But either way, both designs aren't really suitable for gerbils due to the front doors (unless the lid can be easily removed and the doors left shut).

Any thoughts on optimal tank size folks?

Their seems to be 2 versions of that cage, one with side mesh, one without, unless your enjoy hoovering(vacuuming) every day I'd get the one without the mesh That said, is the top mesh removable? If not then you wouldn't be able to have deep enough bedding in there due to the large front doors. I'm not seeing a price there (currently unavailable), how does it compare price wise to a similar sized tank? Yes, the top mesh is removable, I know it looks like it cannot be removed but it does. The price that I see is $319USD

Eek, quite a bit then! Good that the lid is removable, you could keep the doors shut and pile the bedding deep! I don't know what the cost of new tanks are in the US, but last year I bought a 79 (US) gallon tank (300 lts, 120Lx50Wx50H cm that's about 4ft x 1.5ft a 1.5 ft, ish) for ~£210 including delivery (UK).

I've changed the name from 'optimal' (implying that bigger isn't better, when it is) to 'good' size tank guide for the next stage up from the minimum size tank, and it leaves quite a bit in between.
Any more thoughts on that anyone?

Changed title, to hopefully get good hits with Google etc!

I think it is already much better and happy for it to become the default.
Might re-read it again in a few weeks and see if anything new jumps out at me...

I've copied the guide to the housing FAQ section, I've linked back to this thread for any comments/discussion, as that one is locked.
I've also unstuck this one.

Just done a couple of little updates, I realised that I hadn't put in any optimal guide, now done. Anyone spot anything else missing?
On a different note, I thought we had a discussion somewhere about setting our minimum cage size (e.g why not go higher, to say match The Blue Cross, or Germany's veterinary society?), I thought it was here, but it isn't. Can anyone remember where that was? LilyandDaisy betty

I'd say 20 gallons is teetering on the edge of being too small for 2 gerbils. After I upgraded my pair to a 40 gallon, I realized how much better it is for them.

Yea I'm inclined to agree.

Re the discussion, maybe I'm thinking of a conversation a few of us were having in a group PM....
