Gerbil Housing Pictures III We've had 2 previous threads showing Gerbil housing pictures, but even the previous one dates w-a-y back to 2010! And except for the last couple of pages or so, most of the set ups are very 'dated'! So we're well over due for a new thread . This thread is for ideal setups only! - Lots of digging room, width and depth (minimum about 8"/20cm).
- No Cedar shavings should be present.
- No old style 'hamster cages', no crittertrails/tube cages, etc.
- No plastic. Enclosures should not have plastic in them (silent spinners, other plastic wheels, proper built bin-cages, and shielded water bottles are exceptions! Just be warned, the former may get chewed! ).
- Solid wheels only with no large steps in them (hopefully no one will have a barred wheel by now! Meshed wheels (with a meshed back) aren't dangerous like the barred ones, but aren't ideal either, as their is a small chance of injuries to toes).
- No cage smaller than 20 gallons (for a pair or single gerbil), and preferably larger.
- Please state the dimensions and capacity of the tank/cage, plus any topper fitted.
If you post any of the "no-nos" above we'll delete the pictures without warning. Reason being is if a new member goes through these pictures and sees that, they might think "Oh cool! I'm going to put them in an all plastic cage! With a plastic hut!" And we all know what will happen to that!
Please post the photo here, rather than just a link to it, to see how to do that, check out this thread. In this thread comments/questions without pictures will be allowed, unlike the previous threads (for now, we'll see how it goes), but please keep it short. If you just want to show you like their cage, then simply hit the 'like' button (thumbs icon-button, top right of their message). If someone/people want to know detailed info about a particular cage, ask the owner to create a new thread about it so you can go into as much detail as you want . The predominant idea for this thread is that people can just scroll through it seeing lots of housing pics, not text , though of course some short questions and answers can be useful for some setups.

I'll kick off with an early photo of my boys setup. This is Avon's and Blake's home (only Avon is visible). 300 ltr/79 US gall tank, wheel and sandbath sit on top of a platform I made, which they haven't buried yet! Would be hard to I think . This one shows the platform better (before they shoved over a load of substrate ). That's Blake btw. Shortly after that I upgraded their sandbath to a bigger bowl.

A couple of the recent ones from the previous thread. My habitat with topper (total dimensions 100x60x80cm) er, decorated for halloween when I took it. imgur.com/a/JiCeHdDRealised I've never actually added my cage here! The setup is pretty much constantly changing (because of both the gerbils and me), but this is their current setup. 3/4 is deep bedding - with various chews, toys and hides; 1/4 is sand - with their wheel, water, hanging chew and coconut hide. Getting a topper or tall lid built soon so it can be filled to the very top with bedding! P.S. if you look closely, you'll see Mali sitting in the holey tunnel imgur.com/gallery/PGL0452
Thea and shab could you post a link that shows the photo here? (I tried to convert them, but it didn't work).

Perfect! Thanks Btw, how do you deal with bedding being kicked out? Is there an inner ledge to reduce it? Or do they simply not kick out much?

No problem To be honest, I can't do much. There isn't an inner ledge, but thankfully they kick out less than my other gerbils did (but they certainly dig a lot). I just have to vacuum up whatever bedding they kick out every couple of days! A bit of a pain, but has to be done

Lol, perhaps strips of cardboard around the edge of the lid would help?
Btw, just realised dimensions are missing from your photo post, although I see I have those for the Detolf in my notes - Ikea detolf ext. 163x43x37 cm, int. 158x38x36(?) cm (216 lts, 47.5 imp gall, 57 US gall, 6004 cm2 floor area).

True, I should try something like that! It isn't too much of an issue though.
Ah sorry about that! I think those dimentions are about right - although I just measured the internal dimensions and it came to 61.8" x 15.5" which is 958 sq inches, or 6180 cm2 so slightly larger area.

120x40x45cm tank (approx. 60 gallons), with a small topper made out of a hamster cage, housing a pair of gerbils. The tank was custom made by Junglepets. A different setup:

Living World Eco Habitat Medium (100x50x50cm, 65 gallons) with a DIY topper of the same size, housing a pair The topper set up differently: The Eco Habitat required some modifications. The base is not fully waterproof so I painted it with two coats of Plastikote Project Enamel. I glued aluminium corner profiles to the wooden corner posts to prevent chewing. I also glued strips of acrylic over the ventilation holes at the sides to prevent bedding falling out and to prevent them being chewed larger.

Thanks for the photos lilyanddaisy , what are the names of those cages?

Thanks for the photos lilyanddaisy , what are the names of those cages? The first two are the Marrakesh terrariums in medium and large and the 120cm is a custom made one from Junglepets (I'll edit the posts to include the names).
