Unchewed cardboard can smell as Gerbils will often use this as a toilet, well mine do! lol Also if you don't have much subsrate in the tank the urine won't be soaked up as well and will smell. I can't really think of anything else that would cause a smell

hello
this week isnt as bad as last week, maybe that is because i put in lots more aspen then usual, and I put in a huge amount of odor eater granules? I moved the tnak into my room to play with them i put them on the top bunk and i had a little read up there. one gerbil obviously got startled y something and did an amazing long jump off the top bunk, it i was ok.
If i put my nose lose i can smell the 'pet shop' smell.
I do put a lot of cardboard in there, but they tend to shred it up, i can't really tell if they wee on it or not.
other then that the odor granules aren't worth the money.
(no fruit or anything like that)

Maybe you could try putting a glass jar in your tank? Sometimes gerbils will use them as a toilet. You can clean the jar every day (actually, I clean my jars twice a day) and that might help eliminate some of the smell.
I have to agree with everyone else, though. I use shredded paper towels as substrate (not the most odor-absorbing thing) and my tanks don't smell. I clean tanks once a week, but it's not because they smell bad. At worst, the tanks smell a little gerbilly.

I use Kaytee aspen from the 8 cubic foot bags and it has less odor than any other brands I've found in smaller, more expensive bags. I use the paper bag for shredding material as well. My cages don't smell even up to a month, but I like to change them every 14 days. Gerbils shouldn't smell.. Now my hamsters and mice, they're a different story... lol..

I was wondering about kaytee aspen, I was never really sure about them, but since I know they smell good, look good, and are nice and soft, I'll probably end up using them. This is my first time owning gerbies.

Re Bedexel..I finall got an answer, they referred me to another company who never got back to me so I'm afraid I haven't tried it. I did find a similar product called EcoPetBed which is available at www.earthlyenterprises.co.uk/ but I'm really not sure I can physically accommodate a 22kg pack of cardboard and postage is quite a lot as well! I'm thinking about ordering a small trail pack, I'll post the results if I get round to ordering a pack, weighing up the pros and cons at the minute.

Hi, Aspen bedding is sold at Walmart as well. It's not cheap, but they do like it. I give them some carefresh too, so they can make a soft nest too. Monica

Has anyone that uses Kaytee Aspen ever used another brand of Aspen? I don't know how you guys actually LIKE that smell. I found it way too strong compared to LM aspen..

Knowing how much my boys love to chew, I thought it sounded like their idea of gerbil heaven.

I had aspen, corncob, and pine before... Aspen was expensive, but nice smelling, and they loved it. Corncob was noisy, and got sogy easily. And pine was cheap, nice looking, but toxic so i changed it as soon as i found out it was a slow killer to my precious guys... If im allowed to get more gerbils ( i have none now, i use to, but im going to ask) i think im going to use aspen, and hay. This way, they can burry, tunnel, and chew
