I tried and failed with the peat - it was a love/hate relationship that was doomed from the start; the gerbils loved it, and I hated it. Last time I looked I was still in charge (just) so the peat has gone and we've now got aspen AND IT'S FAB!!!
The peat was messy, dirty and also damp. The aspen is clean (so we can SEE the gerbils again) and they are already starting on a new tunnel so THEY CAN tunnel in it, which is what I was most concerned about because I really would like them to be able to do as many things as they would in the wild.

Thought some 'newbies' might like to see what aspen looks like and how it performs! ;D This is how it looks.... not like woodshavings at all but more like little 'sticks' And this is what it can do with just a little squeaze of the fingers! Think that's why gerbils love it so much as when they trample and tunnel in it, it stays put and doesn't collapse ;D Hope that's informative! ;D Caroline

I really worry about what I'm doing to the environment by buying woodshavings etc.. and as far as I'm aware old shavings can't be recycled..? Does anyone know of a more environmentally friendly substrate that the gerbils can still tunnel in? I really want to stop using my woodshavings, they're dusty and cleaning out the tanks has started to set my asthma off

I put my used gerbie substrate on my compost heap, so it's recycled with me Caroline

I've just realised that T-rex Aspen bedding is made from "Renewable resources", so I don't feel so guilty any more. My girls should finally have some aspen in a few days! ;D

Ooooooo!!! They'll love you soooooo much I promise Sepia! They'll be making tunnels before you know it ;D jyrenze - aspen is more commonly used as a substrate for reptiles, snakes in particular, maybe you'll find some if you look in that direction? I order mine from the reptile section of my internet supplier not the little furries section Caroline

hehehe sepia of course Aspen is made from renewable resources.. it is a different type of wood that is created in a different way so it seems to me... Trees are considered a renewable resources because they will grow back within our life time... a non renewable resource will not be restored in our life time that would be things like oil that we use in our cars and so on, once that is gone it is gone for millions of yrs before any new stuff would be created.
