Ok, I cleaned all the girls out last night and used the new straw bedding rather than woodshavings, and they love it! It's really soft, and they love to nibble on it. They haven't really attempt to make any tunnels in it yet, but it feels like it would be ok for tunnelling.. We'll have to wait and see on that one! It was £2.09 for a 17 litre bag and only took half the bag to fill 2x 15 gallon tanks! Here's how it looks. This is also proof of how soft it is as Daisy and Twist have favoured it over the kitchen paper for bed making! And Daisy waking up in her new straw bed this morning edit: sorry, no idea why that first pic has come up so small!

It's seems like this has been chopped up finer than all the other straw that I saw.. I'm not sure how different it is other than that though. Kitchen paper is perfectly safe to use, they just tear it up and use it to line their beds. I've never seen them eat it, I don't think it's very tasty

They make FANTASTIC tunnels out of aspen ;D it's the best tunnel making substrate available!!!! Please don't just get one gerbil, get at least 2 (same sex) - gerbils really like to have a friend ;D One gerbil on it's own may get depressed and lonely Caroline

Here the ones I used:
Sand Quite expensive, but very decorative, nice to look at. Especially when mixed with hay or twigs, or with stones beneath it. That way they can create tunnels safely. Disadvantage is that it smells quite quickly, as it does not absorb urine.
Wood shavings Cheap. Absorbs well. But can dust a bit.
Hemp My favourite. Smells good, and doesn't smell as fast as when using wood shavings in my opinion. Absobs well. And the gerbils seem to like it to use and to chew. Only a bit more expensive than wood shavings. Luckily not that hard to find in pet store in my area.

sigh... well it is time for a bedding change as theirs is dirty... I finally used up my huge bag of aspen and i go out to find more... and guess what there isnt any anywhere i look.... argggggggg makes me sooo mad... I know the dangers of using cedar and pine so i didnt get those that left me with only one choice... carefresh... so I bought a bag cause i have no choice I have to clean the tank... hopefully by the next time i have to clean it they will have aspen in stock again... this have been very frusterating. Never seen hemp around... and straw doesnt sound too bad... might have to try a feed store and see what is around...
