Hi, due to my stupidity (not closing the aquarium lid) one of my two boys escaped the enclosure and I didn't find out until about 4 hours (could have been outside for shorter time though, dunno). I menaged to get him back and he seems to be just fine (no injury, he is as active as normal), however I am kinda worried, because he was separeted froh his brother who stayed in the aquarium.
Should I be concerned and observe them carefully or is 4 hours (maybe less) too short time for them to get estranged?
Thx so much for any answer!

Four hours is probably okay. I don't think they would forget each other's scents that quickly. Probably what you would worry about was if the escaped one picked up any unfamiliar smells which might confuse other one, or if the escaped one got into anything that might be poisonous. Though your post was a few hours ago so if they still seem fine now I think it's likely all good

Perhaps it's already resolved, but after four hours what I would do is rub him over with some bedding from the tank, then put him in the tank and monitor them for 30-60 minutes. Most likely the other gerbil will be very excited, there'll be lots of activity and grooming and after a while they will settle down to sleep.

He wandered around my room where they have been freeroamed before (although some time ago) and I searched around and the only thing he chewed on was a piece of plain cardboard, thanfully They seem to absolutely not care about his little journey

Yeah, I put him back pretty much immediately (a little panic attack), but all he did was gathering some food and then he went to their nest to sleep. I watched them around half an hour and the other one didn't even care or notice his absence... or so it seemed because there was silence afterwards
