This is ... uncanny. Tilly had previously been climbing up to the top floor in exactly the same spot Lily used to, and she has now starting hoarding food, which was one of Lily's hobbies. She even uses her mouth to carry the small seeds the same way Lily used to. She hasn't learnt these behaviours from Daisy because Daisy never climbs or hoards. The other uncanny thing is that, like Lily, Tilly has odd-coloured claws. All the claws on her back feet are grey, but on both front feet they're mixed. I noticed from the rescue's photos that some of her relatives have the same thing. In Lily's case it was because she was a whitepaw (carrying the sls gene). I don't think it is sls here though because Tilly has none of the other features, which would usually be obvious on a slate gerbil. So I'm not sure what it is but it's a weird coincidence either way! I wonder if it could be linked to the fact that black/slate gerbils usually have patches of white fur on their front paws, but less often on the back paws? Tilly's relatives are all slate as well. Oh and, here are some new photos:

As in someone's turfed out a lot of sand from the sandbath?

As in someone's turfed out a lot of sand from the sandbath? Yep! It reminds me of the time I tried a new sand bath with Lily. She hated it so much she kicked all the sand out, and they tried to drag it away with her teeth (evidently it was blocking an important pathway). She was always very good at expressing her opinions.

Poor Tilly has been a nervous wreck ever since Daisy died! She's so jumpy and skittish. I've started scattering her food right in front of her tunnel entrances so she doesn't have to venture out too far for food. If everything goes to plan, she shouldn't be alone for much longer though.
It's strange because when Tilly was a young pup she had a seemingly calm and unflappable demeanour which made me think she was going to grow up to be really confident. And then at some point around 6 or 8 weeks of age she switched into this incredibly nervous gerbil.
She's still tiny. She weighs a healthy 75g and she's isn't bony or underweight, just very small and lean. I've seen photos of her sisters at 4 months old and they seem bigger, and interestingly they also have many more white hairs than her. Tilly is only just starting to get a couple of white hairs on her neck (aside from the white on her throat and paws).
Her sisters and her mother and her aunt are still looking for homes at Gerbil and Rodent Rescue! I think slate gerbils sadly get overlooked, especially when both in the pair are slate.
