i think my gerbil is dying, i found him this morning lying in his sandbath, so i brought him out to check him and he was quite cold and fairly still in my hand. I put him back in his cage so he can be comfortable but he went back up the platform to lie back down in his sand bath. is this normal ? it seems odd because id imagine thats the coldest place in his cage and the hardest to reach.

Some gerbils love laying in the sand as it feel refreshing.
Perhaps he was just experiencing 'something' that was unusual to him and he felt that the answer to his 'something' was to lay in the sand. Like we do sometimes when we crave food or to keep streching our fingers when our hand feel strange.
Hopefully it is just a passing phase - but I would certainly consider adding a heat mat if you can - or other (protected) heat source so that he has the option to warm himself up. Many times a gerbil can completely return to normal after being warmed up a bit and given a chance to feed up on some energy-dense foods (sunflower hearts, oats, nut powder, egg biscuits, kale, etc).

sorry to hear about your gerbil, try to hold him to warm him up if he's still cold, and tempt him with food -right in front of him, not in bowl, and water(on a spoon) to see if he will eat. If he still seems off, take him to a vet to get checked, odd sleeping places can mean not well.
