I had 2 gerbils and one sadly passed on however now I have a one female gerbil( peanut) that was with the one that passed still. Should I get a new gerbil to be with peanut ? I know they are social animals I’m just unsure what would be best since the 2 orginal gerbils grew up from babies after getting them in the pet store?

Sorry to hear you lost a gerbil . As for getting a new cage mate for Peanut, that depends how old she is and how fit and healthy she is? An approximate threshold is 3yrs old, but if she is a little older than that and very active, fit and healthy (so acts younger than she is), then even over that age she'll likely benefit from a new friend (using the split intro method).

I belive she is around a year and a half old she is very shy compared to the one I had but loves exploring and diggings tunnels. I think she was the submissive one as she was the smaller one always weighing less than her sibling.

Would you be able to tell me more about split cage intro? I currently have a 40 gallon breeder tank so I was wondering how I should go about introducing a new gerbil in without causing conflicts

Is there a certain time I should wait to get a gerbil to bond with peanut after her sisters passing?

A rough rule of thumb is 1-2 weeks, but really it depends on your gerbil. If she seems back to her normal self before that, then you could start a split intro sooner. Re the split cage intro, you can start off by reading this thread. Then try searching in the Behaviour and Introducing Gerbils forum section for split intro threads, particular paying attention to betty's replies.
