I have a father and son pair of gerbils and out of the blue they started fighting. The father was bleeding in the nose from the fight I have an extra tank so I separated them but I'm not sure what to do.

Unless you can identify what started the fighting it is best to keep them apart. I don't know of many people who have had long term success reintroducing gerbils once they've started to fight, though I do understand the desire to try again when they've gotten along for so long.

If you are sure that the father and sone were definitely fighting each other - or you are assuming that is what happened - then of course you can look to get them a new friend each.
You would be best to make your own split introduction enclosure/s for each one and ideally get either a very young pup (6-8 weeks old) for each as this is the easiest option for a split, alternatively other single older gerbils may work, but could take longer to introduce.
It is never guaranteed though that they will get on - so take your time picking the best gerbils for your intros - and don't rush into it.
How old were your gerbils by the way - and please add your data to the ongoing thread for declans if you have time...

This is the thread to report a declan if you can. We're collecting data to try to get a better idea of what type of gerbil clan tends to declan and which doesn't.

Leave a comment on the thread with as much or as little information as you are able to give about the declan. The first post in the thread says what type of information to give.
