Last week my gerbil's sister passed away suddenly at just over a year old. My remaining gerbil (Chai) was the dominant of the pair and seems to be coping fairly well with being on her own - chewing, burrowing and causing chaos as usual. I know gerbils are social creatures and at just over a year old Chai could have a long time on her own, but I'm also not sure given her temperament how she would deal with someone new. I went into the local pet store earlier to pick up an order and they had a lot of gerbil female pups. I explained the situation but they were clear they would only ever sell pairs of gerbils. I am concerned from what I have read on here that a trio of females would not work well. I would appreciate some advice on this please.

I would probably pass on the pet store gerbils for a couple of reasons. One, a trio is less stable. Especially with your girl being fairly young herself, you want this to be a stable group for quite a long time. Two, unless the pet store can give you their birth date, I'd be concerned they're on the older side, which may make pairing two to one very difficult. So, unless you are prepared for two tanks of gerbils just in case, I'd try to find someone with a single you can adopt for your girl.

What did you do in the end sunflower? Btw, welcome to the forum

Thanks Markpd.
We are trying to find her a new little friend via a rescue. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any single female gerbils around at the moment so we will keep looking for her.

Have you considered buying from a breeder? They'll usually be able to sell you a single young pup to introduce to a lone gerbil.

I'm in the South of England. I don't know if it's the wrong part of the south, lol, but can't Croydon's Gerbil and rodent rescue help you?

We know a gerbil breeder in Aldershot too on our list of known breeders if that is where in the South you are close to?
