She's been very attentive to her litter, though. Her fur is greasy and clumpy and whenever I give her sand baths she just digs in it and doesn't roll. for the last couple days, I've been sprinkling sand on her and grooming her with a toothbrush, but she's still pretty oily (I bet I could cook something with it). I'm not even sure she knows how to use it (her sister did, but considering she's RIP she won't be much help at the moment). Thoughts?

Is this her 1st time with a sandbath? If so, it may just take her a little time to figure it out.

How has mum been?
Greasy fur can be a sign that she isn't keeping on top of her own health while caring for the pups - or just that her nest if far too sweaty, I often have litters of pups that all sleep in a heap and wake up super sweaty and greasy.
You could try giving her a large jar or container filled with medium to long strand meadow hay as that can sometimes tidy up a greasy coat if the sand bath isn't working out for her?
Also, I would pop in a new tidier or slightly larger potential nest with some fresh hand-shredded kitchen roll loose in the enclosure - that way she can move the pups to the new clean empty one and start afresh if she isn't happy with the existing one - OR - just have a decent spring clean with the existing one herself - without you risking moving or injuring the pups yourself. Mums usually sort themselves out quite well given the chance.

yeah mom just moved out last night into a new box (the pups seemed to know where to go without her guidance). I'll try the hay. I have some sitting in the freezer. Will she roll in it or something?

Great news - all change.
As for the hay - they just move through it if you put enough in - as well as accidently rubbing against it around their face when they chew it.
hopefully everyone is a bit happoer now anyway - and once you are happy she is totally happy with the new nest - take out the old one - clean it and replace afresh again (as sometimes mums want to sleep away from the kids. I alsways have at least 2 nests with my litters - if not 3 just in case. Mums need their beauty sleep...
