Hi I have two gerbils in a medium Eco Living World habitat, it measures approx 99 x 59 x 55. I’d like to give them more space and only have the room to add on vertically. I’ve seen the exact cage for sale near me and wondered about fixing the two together - remove the lid of the bottom one and remove the bottom of the top one. I could have some tall platforms in there for wheels, food etc and the bottom tank would have deep bedding. We have cats so I would mesh the back of the top tank for extra ventilation but the front and side would need to stay Perspex glass. I am wondering about how on earth I would clean the bottom tank tho, as it will be 120cm high? Hubby is tall so could possibly lean over and do it! Also the gerbils are hard to get out and I have to get them in a cardboard tube so I can lift them out for playpen time when I clean the tank. I’m thinking that I’d never be able to get hold of them again! I need to be careful what I put on top and it can’t be too ‘open’ as I have two cats, the Perspex works well for this. I’d love to give them the extra room tho, even tho what they have is a good size. Any advice/thoughts on this idea please?!

Could you construct some kind of front-opening doors for the top cage? I think a 120cm deep cage would be quite impractical, especially if the top cage isn't easily removable. Front-opening doors can be really helpful for taming as well. I have a Living Eco Habitat too, and I had a wood and mesh topper made for it. There are photos of it in this thread

That looks great, so your topper is the same size as the bottom? So yours must be around 120cm tall? I assume the bottom tank is ok to clean as you have the front opening doors? I may get this other Eco and modify the front so it's mesh doors. I have two cats though and worry about them jumping up and trying to stick their claws through the mesh, they can't do this with the perspex.
Did you make the topper yourself? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks

The topper is roughly the same size as the tank. I find as the tank is so large and as the gerbils mostly pee on the topper shelves and in the sand bath, that I rarely need to clean the bottom tank out fully. I can reach in through the topper doors to do most things and for major cleaning, I take the topper off.
I designed the topper and my dad did the actual construction.
